The TRUE CRIME GROUP held a highly successful meeting in April when Group member Margaret Hayday gave a truly excellent presentation about convicts transported to Australia in the 18th century, focussing on 11 year old Mary Wade who was tried at the Old Bailey for theft, found guilty and sentenced to death, later pardoned and transported to Australia in a hazardous voyage lasting over a year. Margaret’s meticulous research was matched by her highly professional documentary-style presentation with images, images, and music. The highlight was Margaret’s collaboration with Jan Gilling’s Play Reading group who re-enacted Mary’s trial, using the original Old Bailey transcript. Jan says her group stepped out of their comfort zone, but they are being too modest! This collaboration between two groups represented the best of U3A and will hopefully be an inspiration to other groups to join forces on a project.
